HURRICANE LIGHT THE NIGHT FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE

My name is Cole Myers. I am the brother of coach Grace and Callum and have swam with the Hurricanes for approximately 10 years. I had to stop competing in summer swimming two years ago when I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, and unfortunately couldn’t swim last summer because of a relapse. After my first diagnosis, Michelle Raiche-Marsden introduced me to the Lymphoma and Leukaemia Light The Night walk in Halifax, a fundraising event to raise money for blood cancer research in Canada. I decided to register and ended up leading a team, Team Hurricanes, which raised over $13,000 for the event. Last year I created an annual online auction, called Bid to Beat Blood Cancer, to continue my fundraising efforts. With the help of the Hurricanes, we raised over $35,000 for the 2018 Light the Night walk, far surpassing our $15,000 goal!

This year, the Hurricanes have agreed to support my fundraising efforts by having a Light The Night fundraising challenge over the next two weeks. The coaches will divide the athletes into 4-5 fundraising groups, and all team members will be given sponsorship sheets so that they can collect donations from friends, family, and door-to-door. There will be a reward for the team that raises the most by the end of the two weeks, as well as a few individual awards at the banqet for the top fundraisers.

I will be meeting with all athletes on Monday July 22 during land training to kick off the fundraising challenge and hand out sponsor sheets. Any athlete who raises over $100 will receive a lantern at the annual Light The Night Walk in October if they choose to register for the event. If you would like me to register you and/or your athlete as part of our team for the walk please send me your email address to cole@bidtobeatbloodcancer.org and the names of those you would like to have registered (the more the merrier!). Also, any individual donating $25 or more will receive a tax receipt from the Lymphoma & Leukemia Society of Canada. If you have any questions, please feel free to direct them to either myself or coach Grace.
