What to Bring
Swim Meet Checklist
Swim Suit | Team suits are available for purchase and are preferred for swim meets. Any training suits can be worn for practices. |
Swim Cap (2) | Team caps are available for purchase. Team caps are to be worn at meets by all athletes. Bringing an extra cap is highly recommend as they do get misplaced and sometimes break. Training caps are necessary for those with longer hair as they help prevent the distraction of hair in the face during practice. Any cap can be worn for training. |
Goggles (2 pairs) | Goggles are necessary for practice and for swim meets. A spare pair is highly recommended. Please ensure goggles fit properly. Do they have suction without the straps on? Then they will be water-tight! Sometimes it takes a little time to find the right fit for your swimmer. As all summer meets are held outdoors, tinted goggles are recommended for meets. |
Towel(s) | It is recommended to have more than one towel for swim meet days, especially wet ones. One towel is sufficient for most practices. |
Sports Bag | A sports bag is helpful at practice and essential at meets to safely carry belongings. To help prevent loss, all belongings should be labeled with the athlete’s name and team name. Please do not bring valuables to practice or to meets. It is not the responsibility of the coaches to babysit belongings. |
Team T-shirt & other clothing | Wear the team t-shirt provided with your registration, some shorts, sweatshirts and track pants, depending upon the elements. Dress in layers and keep in mind, most mornings can be chilly! Make sure you have whatever you may need to spend the day outdoors and hats are a good idea, too. Team Clothing although not mandatory, any clothing that sports the Hurricanes logo is a great way to show your pride in your team. |
Footwear (sneakers & sandals) |
It is recommended that athletes wear appropriate footwear (rubber-soled, waterproof sandals ie: Flip Flops) to help protect feet around pool areas at meets. Sneakers should be brought to swim meets for dry-land warm ups which will take place before or after pool warm ups every meet. Properly fitted running shoes are mandatory for land training sessions. |
Sunscreen/ Bug Repellent | Being in and out of the pool, water - proof sunscreen is a must for swimmers and don't forget you will need to protect yourself, too. Some meets can get buggy, depending on the weather, so you may wish to bring bug repellent. |
Plenty of water | It is very important for swimmers AND parents/ guardians to STAY HYDRATED. |
Healthy snacks & meals | We follow the "Good Grub Guide" with the Hurricanes so no junk food from the canteens is allowed at the meets - yes, that goes for PARENTS, too! As such, we all travel with coolers/ lunch bags to ensure we have all the healthy food we need for the day. Wheeled coolers are preferred by most as sometimes it is a walk from the car to our team area. |
Chairs/ Blanket | Between events, you will want somewhere to hang out with your swimmer(s) so bring some chairs and/ or a blanket to sit on. Some days a blanket is handy to wrap up in as well! |
Sun shade/ Shelter | Some families choose to invest in portable canopies/ tents/ various shelters to stay out of the sun and rain and people even use wagons to transport their gear from their car, for the day. None of these things are required, and you can usually share a square with a teammate. |
Rain Gear/ Umbrella | Unfortunately, the sun is not always a problem when you are spending the day outside but meets only stop for Thunder Storms and extremely heavy rain. Come prepared! |
Activities for the kids | There's time between events for the kids to play so anything that might keep them entertained might be a good idea, especially on rainy days. The past few summers kids have enjoyed making bracelets (like Rainbow loom), and playing cards. Some meets have playgrounds and space to play other things so ask around if you are wondering what the location is like. Check out VENUES for addresses, maps and sometimes pictures and weblinks. |
